Our ‘Nature Connections’ Allotment Group starts up again this week and we are excited to get growing after a brief rest over the winter!
The project, funded by Hey Smile Foundation, supports positive mental and physical wellbeing, and is part of a test and learn project for the NHS to help it get to grips with Green Social Prescribing. Our previous sessions have included a range of interesting and stimulating activities to increase participants’ horticultural skills and wildlife knowledge. We’ve made nettle fertiliser, weaved willow obelisks, dug a pond, pressed apples and cooked delicious soup and courgette fritters!
When we’re not busy tending the fruit and vegetables, the Open Country allotment is a great place to relax and get close to nature. What can be better than eating your sandwiches whilst watching buzzards and red kites soaring in the skies above? Or sipping your cup of tea whilst listening to the buzz of the bees as they fly from flower to flower. The allotment group is a great opportunity to learn new skills in a relaxed, supportive environment – but don’t just take our word for it – read these commendations from volunteers and members of the group…
“I’m so glad that Open Country and the allotment is now a part of my life…it really helps my mental health.” Group member
“I have to say it has been a pleasure to work with the group. I really feel I’ve made new friends and it’s also inspired me in my garden!” Sally, Volunteer
“It’s a nice place – I can relax and be myself.” Group member
Get in touch on 01423 507227 if you would like more information about joining the group. We look forward to seeing you down the allotment soon – in the meantime, Happy Gardening!
