We’re still ‘buzzing’ after the official launch of our new electric minibus at Knaresborough.
A special ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at Conyngham Hall riverside, with the support of local MP Tom Gordon and key partners including John Ward-Campbell, Climate Change Business Partner for North Yorkshire Council.
Open Country member Caroline cut the ribbon, before we enjoyed tea and scones in the sunshine at the Ugly Duckling cafe.
Our new bus – called Albus – is pretty wizard! It was funded thanks to the Postcode Neighbourhood Lottery and North Yorkshire Council UKSPF, and is quiet, comfortable and accessible for our members.
For us, as a charity championing both the countryside and conservation, we’re delighted to join the 21st century by embracing a more sustainable vehicle and reducing our environmental impact.

It is designed with full accessibility in mind, with movable seating for wheelchair users and a rear lift for easy boarding.

Open Country is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, and this milestone marks an exciting development in our ongoing mission to provide people with disabilities the opportunity to explore and enjoy the natural world.

Chief Officer David Shaftoe commented, “As a charity that champions both the countryside and conservation, we’re committed to reducing our environmental impact. This new electric minibus is a cleaner and more sustainable option compared to traditional diesel buses, and will significantly improve the travel experience for our members.”

Richard Firth, Chair of Trustees, added, “This is our first electric minibus, and it’s a major step for us as we embrace the future of sustainable transport – an achievement that’s especially meaningful as we celebrate our 35th anniversary.”

In addition to the minibus launch, Tom Gordon is fundraising for both Open Country and Harrogate Hospital Community Charity by participating in the London and Paris Marathons this April. To support his efforts, visit Tom Gordon’s JustGiving page.
